Schools Talk Summer

Oyster Bay High School Principal Dr. Dennis O’Hara addressed the board of education at Tuesday night’s meeting about offering a summer school program at the high school. It would be the first time the district had a summer school program in more than 12 years.

Dr. O’Hara explained that with the institution of the Common Core state standards, students are faced with a greater level of academic rigor and more challenging coursework. The program would offer remedial and enrichment classes for students both in and out of district.

“A summer school would attend to the needs of students who haven’t reached proficiency by the end of the regular school year,” said O’Hara.

The board authorized Dr. O’Hara to develop a plan and return to the board in a few months with a proposal.

The architectural firm of Burton, Behrendt and Smith (BBS) continued their ongoing proposal for a project to address the overcrowding issue in the band and chorus rooms at the high school. In their plan, the art and music classrooms will be consolidated into one area, which will accommodate the hundreds of students who are in band and chorus and the arts. The new construction would result in much needed extra classrooms in the main high school building for general education classes.

The board narrowed it down to two of the previous suggestions and asked for more information from the firm before committing to a proposal.

BBS is going to do a building utilization study and return to the board to show the need for additional classrooms and how the construction project will help.
