Art in the Afternoon: Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel
Some of the most awe-inspiring works of western art can be found in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel—among them, Michelangelo’s astonishing frescoed ceiling, a masterpiece of truly epochal importance. With radiant vitality, Michelangelo depicted scenes from the Old Testament—prophets, sibyls, The Creation of the Heavens and Earth, the Expulsion From The Garden of Eden, the story of Noah and the Flood, and more—all rendered with the quality of painted sculpture. Michelangelo returned to the chapel in the years 1536-1541 to create the famous Last Judgment fresco on the altar wall. This work unifies the symbolism of the room and is yet another masterpiece. From 1980-1994, the chapel sustained a controversial cleaning that revealed to our own era the artist’s rich color palette and his mastery of chiaroscuro (modeling with light and shadow). The chapel’s importance in the history of art is profound, and for nearly 500 years it has been an academy for young painters—Raphael, Rubens, Caravaggio. Presented in glowing Powerpoint with discussion of all Michelangelo’s work in the chapel in the context of the Italian Renaissance.
