Man Shot After Run-Down Attempt

A Baldwin man attempted to run over police officers in Westbury on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 4:19 a.m. after attempting to flee Clinton Street in a stolen vehicle.

According to detectives, third precinct officers responded to a call for a suspicious car with occupant in front of 722 Clinton St. As police approached the vehicle on foot, the defendant Levaughn Tingle, 25, of Baldwin, attempted to quickly flee the scene, striking a parked vehicle. Police say he then intentionally drove toward the officers, causing them to retreat up the driveway of a Clinton Street residence. As the officers were positioning to avoid being crushed between the house and vehicle, Tingle violently maneuvered the vehicle while in the driveway, attempting to run the officers down a second time. An officer then fired several rounds at the defendant who was struck causing non-life threatening injuries.

Tingle was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Three officers were taken to a local hospital for trauma. The vehicle that Tingle was operating was reported stolen. He has previous convictions for Attempted Burglary 2nd degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Petit Larceny and is on parole for Burglary 2nd degree. Tingle also has an active arrest parole warrant for absconding.

Tingle is charged with first degree reckless endangerment, third degree criminal possession of stolen property and a parole violation. The investigation is still ongoing.
