It was all about lacrosse on Saturday, Nov. 29 at Hicksville High School as multiple teams and alumni came to play for a good cause. Over 200 volunteers and players showed up on a chilly day to support the Michael Magro Foundation, a non-profit organization that was established to honor the life of Michael Magro, a former Hicksville student who passed away from leukemia in 2005.
“This all started three years ago when members of the boy’s alumni team held a lacrosse clinic here at the high school,” said Michael’s mother, Terrie, who is one of the founders of the Michael Magro Foundation. “It has branched into an all day event with several teams playing including teams from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade and teams from other school districts.”
The event included gift bags and giveaways, a DJ pumping out a wide variety of music and a whole lot of featured lacrosse action. The games started at 9 a.m. and culminated with the boy’s alumni game which began at 2 p.m.
“Part of the whole the process is to get all of these kids involved and this year was our best turnout yet despite the cold weather,” said Terrie.
Hicksville board of education member, Steve Culhane, who helped referee some of the games, said that a lot of effort and collaboration went into putting the event together.
“A lot of people including certified Nassau County Lacrosse Officials volunteered their time today for this worthy cause,” said Culhane. “We had four youth teams and four high school teams playing throughout the day.”
The lacrosse alumni games are just one of many events that go on throughout the year in support of the foundation. This month, members of the boy’s alumni team will head to Winthrop University Hospital to hold a toy drive for the Winthrop Pediatrics and Cancer Care for Kids unit.
