The Nassau County Planning Commission unanimously voted to approve the subdivision of the Roslyn Country Club property, an action that was necessary in order for the Town of North Hempstead to move forward with plans to purchase the 7.3 acre property for $2 million from Corona Realty.
“The County Planning Commission’s decision is great news,” said Councilman Peter Zuckerman, who represents the Second Council District. “This approval for the subdivision of the property keeps us steadily moving forward toward our goal of building a park in the Roslyn Country Club area of North Hempstead that will be the centerpiece of this community.”
Once the property is purchased, it will be placed in the new Levitt Park at Roslyn Heights Park District, the creation of which was approved in 2013 by the New York State Comptroller. The town plans to move ahead with a $12.2 million renovation of the facility, with work on the club’s tennis courts beginning as early as next spring.
In November, the town held two public information forums for the community and presented a plan to renovate the club’s pool area, clubhouse and tennis courts and to construct a new locker room facility, playground and a basketball court. The renovations would be funded by a $12.5 million bond.
“The response of those in attendance at both public forums was very positive,” said North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth.
“We are optimistic that the project will continue to move forward.”
All residents of the park district, who will pay for the park in their taxes, are permitted to attend the park. There will be a certain number of “outside-of-park-district” memberships retained for town residents, with those nondistrict town residents paying a membership fee.
