Holiday Spirit Comes To Hicksville

The Hicksville community recently gathered to usher in the holiday season with a favorite tradition, at the annual tree lighting ceremony in Kennedy Park. Though rain pushed the fun back a day later than originally planned, the festivities on Sunday, Dec. 7, were a hit.

The Hicksville-Jericho Rotary, with the help of the Town of Oyster Bay, the Hicksville Fire Department, the Hicksville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the Hicksville Water Department and radio station Fresh 102.7, hosted the event. Dr. Jim Bentson, Rotary Club president and event organizer, opened the ceremonies. Town Supervisor John Venditto, Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker, New York State Assemblyman Michael Montesano and Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone attended the event and welcomed the crowd of over 250 people, wishing them a happy holiday season.

During the evening, the Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary graciously gave out hot chocolate to anyone that needed a little warming up. Cub Scout Troop 381 was the official honor guard for the event and led the Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by Girl Scout Troops 3362, 3553, 3551, 3085, 3302, 3307, 3367, 3315, 3595,  3607, 3395 and 3180 who entertained the crowd with a collection of Christmas songs.

After the songs, Santa came riding in on a shiny, red fire engine. Saint Nick helped light the large Christmas tree and 22 smaller trees in Kennedy Park. Once the trees were lit, the crowd was entertained by the Ella Marie School of Dance who presented seven holiday dance numbers with music from DJ Robert Schapiro from Unforgettable Entertainment.
