Youth Host Evening For Seniors

It is often said that the true spirit of the holiday season is always best felt when giving back to your community. The Teens of the PiT Youth Council, a volunteer group at “The PiT” (Port Washington’s Teen Center), made up of youngster in grades 6-12, really embraced that thought when they hosted a pizza and bingo night for the senior citizens at Landmark on Main Street.
The evening was arranged by Landmark’s social worker Liz Pinsky and executive director of The PiT Michael Donnelly as an intergenerational project that would be rewarding for all who were involved.
The teens set up the bingo games, took turns at the prestigious job of “The Caller,” handed out prizes to the winners and, of course, served up some delicious pizza.Bingo_010915A
The best part of the experience was having the two generations sharing stories and laughs. “It is no secret that sometimes the elderly view teenagers as a part of the population that do more harm than good,” Donnelly said. “This was a great way to show that not only can teenagers bring a positive contribution to society, but also an understanding that we are all in this together and we need to open up our hearts to everyone young and old.”
“It felt really good to see how happy we made them,” said Brandon Morales, 12th grade student at Schreiber High School and the PiT Youth Council’s president. “The success of this event ensures this won’t be the last time teens and residents of the Landmark building will be teaming up.”
The PiT Youth Council is one of the many offerings at the PiT, a non-profit program open seven days a week, with fun and free activities for the teens of Port Washington.
