SAT Course

A comprehensive SAT Prep Course recommended for students in 10th and 11th grade will be offered by the Eugene J. Reilly Squire Circle of St. Paul the Apostle R.C. Church in Brookville for 10 weeks, from Jan. 27 to April 7, on Tuesdays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. The course costs $250, plus the book fee. St. Paul the Apostle R.C. Movie: Quicksand

Come to the Bethpage Public Library from 2-4 p.m. and enjoy a movie matinée of Quicksand starring the late Mickey Rooney. Dan Brady (Mickey Rooney) is a skirt-chasing young mechanic who steals $20 from the cash register at work to go on a date with blonde temptress Vera Novak (Jeanne Cagney). His intentions are to return the money before the theft is discovered, but the garage’s bookkeeper arrives earlier than expected and foils Brady’s plan. As Brady hustles to cover up his crime, he finds himself pulled into an ever worsening “quicksand” of crime, each of his wrongdoings more major than the last. Starring: Mickey Rooney, Jeanne Cagney and Peter Lorre. (1950; NR 79 mins)

Game Changers Series

Come to the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library at 2 p.m. where Dr. William Thierfelder will present the fourth session of his 10 part series which explores a person or event that changed the world, our nation or the way we live our lives. Les Petits Artistes

Bethpage children are invited to submit original artwork in the form of paintings, drawings and collages to be displayed in the library’s art gallery throughout the month of March. Make sure that your entry includes your name, phone number, address, school and grade on the back. One entry per child and for grades K-5 only. Sign up has already begun. Bring entries to the Bethpage Public Library on or before Friday, Feb. 6.

Chess For Kids

Join the Long Island Chess Nuts, a scholastic organization promoting educational and positive benefits of chess to children and take part in a chess class. A Long Island Chess Nuts top-qualified coach will teach kids ages 7-11 how to play chess and show them tips and strategies on how to become a chess expert. There will be a $2 program fee per child and registration is a must. Class will be held from 2-3 p.m. in the Bethpage Public Library Children’s Program room.

Come enjoy 30 vendors with beauty, health, dating tips and services on display, panel experts with guest speakers, prizes and giveaways. Topics include personal matchmaking, how to boost your self esteem, divorce Q&A, exercise and makeup. Turner, Degas and Monet: Art and Technology in the 19th Century

Industrialization and technology of the 19th century had a profound impact on the development of some of the most popular artists. This course with David Brett will explore the interaction of art and technology throughout the 19th century and will include artists such as Ingres, Eugene Delacroix, JMW Turner, Goya, Degas, Monet, Rodin and Van Gogh. Tax Grievance Workshop

Legislators Rose Marie Walker and Laura Schaefer will be hosting A “Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshop” today from 7-9 p.m. at the Bethpage Public Library auditorium and lobby. Homeowners will learn how to fill out this application, which will be provided. This workshop will be conducted with a power point demonstration, outlining how to fill out the grievance forms. There is no individual help for completing the forms.


Friday, Jan. 16

Film at Library

“One Last Cry: The Story of the Comfort Women,” film will be shown at the Plainview Library at 2 p.m. The Story of the Comfort Women documents the heartbreaking story of girls forced into sex slavery by the Japanese military. Run by David Lee, President of the Korean-American Public Affairs Committee. Assemblyman Charles Lavine will attend the program and make opening remarks.
