Collection Of Christmas Trees And Wreaths For Recycling
A reminder to residents who have a natural Christmas tree or wreath to dispose of, please leave them at the curb on your regularly scheduled recycling collection day. They will be collected by the department of public works and offered to other agencies for beach erosion control or rendered at the village yard for use around trees and shrubs as mulch.
Please assist the village by removing tree stands, strands of electric lights and plastic bags from the discarded trees and cooperate with your neighbors by disposing of them only on the scheduled recycling collection days.
If you have an artificial Christmas tree for disposal, please call the sanitation department for a special pickup at 516-465-4031 or 516-465-4032.
Shop And Dine In Garden City
There are many things that make Garden City such an appealing place to live and work. Among these are our viable and welcoming business districts with their fine restaurants, unique shops and regional stores.
Many residents consider shopping and dining in our business districts as “experience shopping” because they meet friends and neighbors along the way and have an opportunity to interact with them. This is in stark contrast to frantically dashing through the crowds in the mall or the big box retailers.
I encourage residents to make a conscious effort to choose Garden City as the place to shop and dine. It would be extremely helpful to our business community if you could make one purchase daily in the village stores. Customer service, selection and quality are outstanding. While shopping or dining let the merchant know that you appreciate them and all that they offer. I look forward to seeing everyone in town.
Police Department News
Each week in this column I will be including information from Commissioner Jackson of our police department. This week he has asked that I include the following.
Last month we received reports from two residents who reported that they were victims of phone scams. These scams are varied. Some examples of phone scams that have been reported are from residents who state that they have received phone calls from persons claiming to be from LIPA or other public utilities stating that they (the resident) owed back fees and that their service will be shut off, if they don’t pay immediately by way of money cards. In another scam, a parent or grandparent will get a call from a person claiming to be a lawyer or police authority, and in most cases from a foreign country, stating that their child or grandchild is under arrest and needs money to be wired to them for bail. People should also be cautious when they receive a call from a person claiming to be from a credit card company, medical insurance company or another public entity, stating that they need personal information such as date of birth, credit card numbers and/or social security numbers for verification of their account. When residents get these types of calls, they should attempt to verify the source of the call. They should not give out personal information over the phone.
Residents are urged to call the Garden City Police Department when they believe that they are being targeted in a phone scam or if they have already been victimized as the result of a phone scam. In the event of an emergency, residents can dial 911 or dial 516-465-4100 for a non-emergency.
Fire Department News
Each week in this column I will be including information from Chief Castoro of our Fire Department. This week he has asked that I include the following.
Over the past few weeks we have received a number of emergency calls on our business line. We remind all residents that if you have an emergency or need a fire department response, you should dial 516-746-2800.
Board Of Trustees Meetings
The next regularly scheduled board of trustees meeting will be on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 8 p.m. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of Village issues from a first-hand perspective. I look forward to seeing you at some of the board meetings this year. Although the budget process is on-going, the first budget presentation and tour of the village facilities will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7.
