Beautiful Me, Beautiful You

Courtney Wall, a physical education teacher at Hicksville High School and the physical education administration recently brought a wonderful program to the students of Hicksville High School known as “Beautiful Me,” which was provided through the Hance Family Foundation.

The Hance Family Foundation is dedicated to providing innovative educational programs for children of all ages and abilities as a way to honor their daughters Emma, Alyson and Katie Hance. They present successful and original educational programs, created and implemented by The Hance Family Foundation to help enhance and develop the confidence and self-esteem of all children. There is no fee associated with these programs and they are funded completely by the foundation.

The Beautiful Me workshop was held on Jan. 14 by the Hicksville High School female physical education and health staff, with over 90 female winter athletes and the Hance Family Foundation personnel. Beautiful Me is a self-esteem program designed to educate females by promoting appreciation for their genuine qualities, accurate self-awareness, and the satisfaction of helping others. Beautiful Me’s basic lesson plans are designed to teach girls of all ages how to think positively and with assurance about their bodies, their skills and their relationships with others.

The staff and student-athletes were fortunate to hear opening remarks from Warren Hance, a founder and president of the Hance Family Foundation. The girls and staff enthusiastically participated in the self-esteem workshop activities and great conversations were initiated. Many of the student-athletes expressed how they were not sure what to expect, but truly enjoyed the program and expressed their sincere thanks for providing them this opportunity.

In recent years, the need for stronger and more effective character education programs (encompassing the development of self-esteem, self-advocacy, self-confidence, leadership of girls and the prevention of bullying) has received national attention. The Beautiful Me curriculum provides instruction and hands-on activities focusing on the wonderful attributes that make each girl special—her strengths, talents, personality and individuality. The program is a great place for all young ladies to learn about themselves and be happy with whom they are as unique, confident women. The program is and will continue to be a tremendous success in the Hicksville Public Schools.
