Mustangs Basketball star senior Steven Gessner of the Mineola Mustangs Boys Basketball team continued his solid play this season with an excellent stretch during the week of Jan.12. Leading the Mustangs to a 69-66 overtime victory over Island Trees, and a 48-46 win over Locust Valley, Gessner has helped keep the team in the playoff hunt with a 5-9 record (4-5 in Conference 5A play).
If the Mustangs can win two of their final three games and finish with a .500 record in the League Play, they will qualify for the postseason. During the game against Island Tress, Gessner led the attack with a whopping 35 points and 22 rebounds to go along with seven assists. Against Locust Valley, Steven scored 15 points, including seven in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs overcame a six-point deficit before hanging on for the close win.
For the season Gessner, a top 20 Nassau selection, is averaging 17 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. As of right now, the talented 6-foot-5 swingman is looking to attend SUNY Maritime and SUNY Old Westbury, both of Division 3’s Skyline Conference, with a possible landing spot of Division 2’s Molloy College, where his brother TJ played.
In addition to excelling on the basketball court, Gessner also played on the Boy’s Varsity Soccer team this fall. Academically, he holds an 87.5 average in school.
