Reading Dream, a nonprofit organization that sends books and other reading materials to needy schools, will hold its annual fundraiser at the Dolphin Bookshop, 299 Main St., Saturday, April 11, from 1-3 p.m.
Musical entertainment at the event will be provided by local music teacher Marie Mularcyk O’Connell and her “Mountain Maidens.” All funds raised by Reading Dream will be used for the cost of boxing and shipping books to schools.
A group of girls from Port Washington and Great Neck formed the first Long Island chapter of Reading Dream in 2011. In addition to collecting books, the girls have held a fundraiser every year.
As a way of giving back to the Port Washington community, the Dolphin Bookshop has hosted the Reading Dream event for the past several years. In 2012 and 2013, the event at the Dolphin Bookshop raised several hundred dollars for Reading Dream.
Volunteers at Reading Dream research schools that need books contact the principals or reading teachers at these school, and finally, the volunteers mail books to the identified schools. Reading Dream accepts new or very gently used books and monetary donations. Donations can be sent to Reading Dream, P.O. Box 181, South Salem, NY, 10590. The Mountain Maidens will return to Port Washington again on June 7, when they will perform at 3:30 p.m. at the Port library, doing an afternoon of folk music on many instruments.
