Roslyn School Superintendent Dr. Dan Brenner made his retirement official at the school board meeting last Thursday night.Brenner, who has served as superintendent since 2009 and assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction from 2005 to 2009 will take a similar position in the Darien, CT school system.
Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, Allison Brown will take over the role of deputy superintendent beginning July 1, 2015 and will officially take over as School Superintendent in July 2016.
In Brenner’s absence, Gerry Dempsey, who served as interim school superintendent in the district in 2006-’07, was appointed by the school board to take over the position for one year starting July 1, 2015 and ending June 30, 2016.
In a letter that Brenner wrote to the Roslyn School community, he said, “I have no doubt the Roslyn Schools are being left in good hands,” Brenner wrote to school district residents. “You are blessed to have a board of education that always puts the interests of the children first. They have created a thoughtful leadership plan that elevates Allison Brown to deputy superintendent for 2015-’16 and then to superintendent for the 2016-’17 school year.”
Brenner added that he had the pleasure of working with Dempsey in 2006.
“He is among the wisest educators I know and embraces the child-centered approach that is so important to our community.”
Brenner, who commuted long distances each day from his home in Westchester County to Roslyn, will have a much easier time traveling to Darien for work.
“As most of you know, I have spent the past 10 years in Roslyn traveling 120 miles per day from my home in Westchester County,” he said. “The ride, where I often spend over 90 minutes in the car each way, has finally gotten the best of me. The commute to Darien will cut my ride in half while presenting me the exciting opportunity to work in a school district that honors education much like ours in Roslyn, something that is very important to me.”
In other news, the superintendent’s proposed budget for next year was discussed at the board meeting. There is a .44 percent overall increase compared to last year’s budget.
The proposed budget will be discussed in further detail at the upcoming board meeting on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Roslyn High School.
