The Hicksville Fire Department responded to two house fires last week, battling blazes in frigid conditions.
On Feb. 3 at 6:35 a.m., the Hicksville Fire Department responded to calls for a house fire on Chestnut Street. Firefighters rescued a family of four, as well as two dogs. The family was transported to NUMC with smoke inhalation, and one was treated for burns. Firefighters controlled the fire quickly and are still investigating the cause.
The Syosset and Jericho Fire Departments assisted at the scene while the Bethpage, Plainview and Levittown fire departments stood by at HFD Station No. 1 to cover the fire district. Third assistant chief Elizabeth Flahavan was in command of the operation.
On Feb. 4 at 7:40 p.m., the Hicksville Fire Department was called to a house fire on Jerusalem Avenue. Arriving unites found heavy smoke coming from the home and a fire in the kitchen that had spread to the attic. No one was at the residence. Firefighters battled the blaze in frigid conditions and were able to control it in an hour. No injuries were reported. Chief of the Department Frank McGeough was in command of the operation.
