Four seventh grade boys from Roslyn Middle School—Jordan Kahn, Justin Hertz, Justin Kalman and Drew Halpern—recently worked together on a Mitzvah Project for their upcoming Bar Mitzvahs at Temple Sinai in Roslyn.
A Mitzvah Project involves actions that benefit others and ultimately strive to make the world a better place. The boys chose to raise money and awareness for the Hospice Care Network and the Hospice Inn in Melville. The Hospice Care Network cares for people of all ages throughout Nassau, Suffolk and Queens living with an advanced illness.
The project was especially meaningful to Jordan Kahn as he worked in memory of his grandmother, Deanna Lichtman, who passed away in September after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma. The Hospice Inn provided care and support for Kahn’s grandmother and her family.
The project was also of great importance to Justin Hertz in memory of his great-grandmother, Mildred Schwartz, who also spent her final days at the Hospice Inn with support and assistance from her family.
The four boys raised awareness and approximately $5,000 by organizing a walk at the Roslyn High School track last November. The attendance and support from friends, family and the Roslyn community was overwhelming. The boys were invited to the offices of the Hospice Care Network where they received thanks and a certificate from members of the organization.
