Where: Massapequa Public Library, Bar Harbour Building, 40 Harbour Ln., Massapequa
When: Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 6:45-8:45 p.m.
Who: Sane Energy Project, MoveOn Long Island, members of the Long Beach City Council and members of the No LNG Coalition
What: Liberty Natural Gas, LLC is proposing to build Port Ambrose, an offshore facility for liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers just a few miles from the NY/NJ harbor and our beach communities. On Wednesday night, residents of Massapequa will speak out against the project alongside MoveOn Long Island the Long Beach City Council (who has unanimously opposed Port Ambrose and passed a resolution calling on Governor Cuomo to veto the project), Sane Energy Project and members of the NoLNG Coalition.
The proposed facility would be a target for terrorism; would threaten fishing, jobs, and tourism; would be a disaster for our climate; and would steer us away from efficiency, conservation, and renewable energy.
What began as local opposition to Port Ambrose in the town of Long Beach (the community that is located closest to the proposed facility location and is therefore at highest risk) is now spreading all across Long Island. On Saturday, the Baldwin Public Library held an event about Port Ambrose that was attended by forty people, including concerned residents of Baldwin, representatives from Congresswoman Kathleen Rice’s office, State Senator Brian Curran, and Nassau County Legislator Laura Curran. On Monday night the Rockaway YCMA at Arverne hosted an event that included State Assembly Member Phillip Goldfeder, New York State Senator Joe Addabbo, a representative from New York City Council Member Donovan Richard’s office, as well as Rockaway residents. Governor Cuomo has the power to stop Port Ambrose, and a growing number of politicians, organizations and residents are calling on the governor to do so.
