The Georgetown University (GU) softball team won both of its matchups at the Landfall Park Hampton Inn and Suites Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 14, in Wilmington, NC. GU got on the board in the bottom of the fifth against the Saint Joseph Hawks, scoring three runs to take the lead, but in the bottom of the sixth inning, GU Hoyas added two more runs to put the game out of reach. A triple by Samantha Giovanniello, of Floral Park, scored teammate Theresa Kane and a single by teammate Megan Hyson following the triple brought in Giovanniello to make it 5-1.
Giovanniello plays short stop and second base for the Hoyas. She is a junior at Georgetown in Washington, DC and a Floral Park Memorial
High School graduate. Before playing for Georgetown, Giovanniello was named 2009 New York State Player of the Year, helping Floral Park Memorial High School win the New York State Softball Championships. She is a two-time First Team All-State, First-Team All-Long Island, and
First-Team All-Nassau County selection. Giovanniello played club softball for Team Long Island Gold.
“I love how hard the girls are playing,” said Head Coach Pat Conlan. “We hit the ball well and had excellent pitching performances.”
GU was victorious over Saint Joseph’s, 5-1, in its first game and went on to defeat UNC Wilmington, 11-3, in six innings. The victories move the Hoyas to 5-3 on the season.
