St. Joseph School—March 21 Family Fun Run
St. Joseph School is celebrating 75 years of teaching minds and guiding hearts in Garden City. They are inviting everyone in Garden City to join them for their party. On March 21, St. Joe’s will be hosting a 5K and 1-mile Family Fun Run beginning at 8:30 a.m. The 5K will be sanctioned and certified by USA Track and Field and professionally chip timed. There will also be an untimed Fun Run. Police Department News
From time to time in this column, I will be including information from Commissioner Kenneth Jackson of our police department. This week he has asked that I include the following.
The recent tragedy in Valhalla, NY where a train struck a vehicle that had entered the train crossing, resulting in several fatalities, reminds all motorists and pedestrians of the dangers of railroad crossings. Motorists and pedestrians should never attempt to cross railroad tracks when the warning signals are flashing and/or when the gates are in the down position or in the process of coming down. Motorists and pedestrians should exercise due caution when approaching a train crossing whether or not the signals or the gates are activated. Keep in mind that there are some crossings that do not have signals or gates.
Emergency Management Radio Tested Weekly
Each week, Garden City along with all villages within Nassau County, perform a radio test with the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management Office (NCOEM) to ensure that their assigned radio is working properly. These radios operate at a 800 MHz frequency and have been in operation for the past several years as a result of funding from former State Senator Michael Balboni. In the event of a major disaster where normal radio communications were disrupted, each village would have the ability to communicate with each other directly as well as with the NCOEM.
Budget Work Sessions
I would like to remind you that the board of trustees will be conducting its final work session to review the proposed 2015-16 village budget on Thursday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. This session is being held in the boardroom at village hall located at 351 Stewart Ave. in Garden City. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Shop And Dine In Garden City And Enjoy The Experience
Although the weather has been exceptionally frigid, I am hoping that residents make a conscious effort to choose Garden City as the place to shop and dine. It would be extremely helpful to our business community if you could make one purchase daily in the village stores. Customer service, selection and quality are outstanding. While shopping or dining let the merchant know that you appreciate them and all that they offer. I look forward to seeing everyone in town.
Board Of Trustees Meetings
The next regularly scheduled board of trustees meetings will be held on Thursday, March 5 and Thursday, March 19 at 8 p.m. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective. I hope to see you at some of the meetings during the year.
