Art In The Afternoon
The Bethpage library presents “The Other-Worldly Vision Of El Greco” with Inez Powell, lecturer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 2 p.m. Born on Crete in 1541, El Greco became an icon painter and later studied in Venice, Rome, and attained greatness in Toledo, Spain, where he painted his major works. His art combines varied influences—the religious fervor of Crete’s Byzantine style; the richness and color of the Venetians; the ordered rendering of deep space in the one-point perspective that shows his knowledge of the High Renaissance. El Greco united all of these factors to create his own outstanding masterpieces. They display technical brilliance, heroic concepts, extreme elongation and emphasis on the unnatural. They also contain an inner life revealed by distortion and dramatic highlighting—that catches the intense spiritual climate of the Counter Reformation, and foreshadows the passionate expressionism of the early 20th Century. An illustrated lecture in PowerPoint.
