Lifelong Port Washington residents and SUNY Stony Brook students Adam Pollack and Sarah Matero have recently started their own business, Long Island Kettle Corn, in order to afford their college tuition. Despite attending a state university, they still met financial hardships, and so decided to take control of their situations. The business venture is risky, but also an investment in themselves to take full accountability of their futures. They started a fundraiser at Indiegogo as an expression of their community’s faith in them. They are excited because everybody loves popcorn and it’s a great way to serve the community! Pollack and Matero currently plan to attend spring festivals and farmers markets to sell the kettle corn, but they are investing in packaging for stores because local businesses have expressed interest in selling it too.
According to Pollack, the kettle corn business “became our passion.” “We’ve invested so much time and money into this venture,” he continued. “I’ve never been more excited to wake up every day, challenge myself in school, take care of business responsibilities, and consistently push myself out of my comfort zone.” Long Island Kettle Corn can be found on Facebook and at longislandkettlecorn.com.
