Editorial: Nepal’s Aftershocks Felt In Garden City

To paraphrase late Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Tip O’Neill, there are times when all news winds up being local. Such is the case with the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, killing an estimated 7,700 people and injuring twice as many. While this may have happened half a world away, the Village of Garden City has a direct connection by way of Dr. Becky Eiwen, a medical missionary serving that nation’s people. It just so happened that she was speaking at Garden City’s Resurrection Lutheran Church sharing her experiences working in a hospital in Tansen, Nepal when the quake struck. The hospital Eiwen works at is 50 miles from the epicenter of this recent temblor and while early reports are that her medical center was unscathed, she is eager to return and help however she can. Working through evangelical organization Interserve USA, the doctor has found most of her work to be in obstetrics, training health care workers and educating the local population about providing better nutrition for their children. As such she’s eager to return and help where she can. Anyone interested in helping donate any assistance to the Nepalese people through Interserve USA should contact Resurrection Lutheran Church at 516-746-4426 or visit www.wresg.org.
