Nutrition week 2015 at Baylis Elementary was a great success. The week started with a wonderful assembly by Food Play, focusing on the essentials of healthy eating and really emphasized balanced diets and limiting items like juice and soda.
The assembly was extremely interactive and enjoyed by all. Baylis continued the fun with interactive lunchtime discussions that focused on key concepts from www.choosemyplate.org. Eating balanced meals and making healthy choices were the goal of these talks.

The morning announcements for the entire week were written with the 5-2-1-0 concept (5 fruits and veggies daily, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour of vigorous physical activity and 0 sugary drinks) in mind. This concept was embraced by the Syosset Central School District’s Nutrition Committee this year. The Baylis community was happy to support this as we continue our work to ensure that our students remain healthy active individuals.
Pedometers were distributed to all students in grades 3-5. Baylis faculty and staff supported our efforts by orchestrating a school wide “Step into Health” graph that illustrated the number of steps completed each day in each grade 3-5. Grades K-2 received special placemats and completed physical activity logs for the week, as well.
Included in the weeklong activities was a healthy food drive to benefit Island Harvest. All in all nutrition and a healthy lifestyle is “alive and well” at Baylis.
