Mineola School District voters will decide a contested school board of education election at the polls today. School Vice President Christine Napolitano of Williston Park with her running mate, Roslyn Heights resident Brian Widman, square against Mineola resident Mark Swensen and Joy Renner, also of Roslyn Heighys, in vying for two open trustee seats.

The seats are decided at-large (the top-two vote getters attain the seats), regardless of the Napolitano/Widman, Renner/Swensen running tickets. The four recently debated at Meet the Candidates Night at Mineola High School.

Mineola School Board President Artie Barnett announced that he would not seek re-election in April, cementing his support behind Napolitano and Widman.

Residents will also vote on an $89.6 million 2015-16 Mineola school budget. The spending plan represents a 1.37 percent in the tax levy and a $1.9 million budget-to-budget increase from 2014-15.

If adopted by public vote, it would be the eighth straight year the school district had been under 2.5 percent or lower. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Jackson Avenue and Meadow Drive. Election and school budget votes will be announced when the polls close after the board of education’s meeting at Jackson Avenue.
