We found many reasons to celebrate May: the end of winter, our annual community fundraiser, the reawakening of our trees and flowers and nothing more important than honoring our mothers.
The most important celebration in May was reserved for the single most vital person in our lives: our mother. Whether we are honoring our birth or adopted mother, stepmother or a family member who took the place of our mother, it is she who most often inspired us to appreciate everything life has to offer. Nurturing and guiding us throughout our lives, she laid the foundation for our future. And so, every May our Mother’s Day Celebration is fit for a queen. A delicious buffet topped with an English Tea and desserts galore set the stage for our annual Silver Threads Fashion Show. A host of models, sporting Silver Threads’ best attire and accessories, were escorted by a very debonair Niculae (pronounced Nicoli) who found it delightful to gently kiss each model as he delivered them to center stage. The finale was an impromptu presentation by a male model who wore a knock-out outfit complete with hat purchased from Silver Threads for the modest price of $8. Needless to say the show was a hit and provided great fun and entertainment to the almost 100 members attending the festivities.
Anticipating the need for a good celebration to welcome spring, center staff, board and members planned an event for May 1, honoring Oyster Bay’s greatest assets. Tapas-style cuisine was prepared by expert chefs including Christina’s Epicure, Jack Halyards, Lucé Ristorante and Wild Honey, as well as the center’s own ‘Chef Anthony,’ staff, center and board members. Delicacy’s such as Mako shark, poached salmon and shrimp cocktails were served. Full House, a Long Island premier band, provided live music, kicking off the evening with a tribute to Billy Joel. The dining hall was transformed into a nautical panorama by the now famous decorator extraordinaire from the Harvest Moon dinner, Charlotte Longo (a member of Senator Marcellino’s staff who enjoys evening exercise programs and volunteers her time at the center) and Senior Advisory decorating committee including Diane Aerne, art instructor Sharon Collins and Betty Kassner. Guests danced the night away and proceeds provided substantial funding for senior programs.
Winter’s end may have dragged on this year well past the first day of spring, but that only made welcoming May all that much sweeter. With open arms we put behind us days of isolation, fear of icy falls and record temperatures. We look forward to the glorious days of summer, discarding our sweaters and digging out our swimsuits and suntan lotion. Ah…life is good.
