CALLING ALL STUDENT MUSICIANS! Do you play a string, woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument? Would you like to improve with the help of your very own music teachers? Do you want the opportunity to perform in front of your friends and family as part of a well-prepared ensemble? Are you looking for a fun activity for a few hours every morning this summer? The chance is right here, in your own school district.
The Port Washington Summer Music Program allows rising fourth to eighth grade musicians to engage in a one-of-a-kind daily ensemble experience within the school walls they know and love. This program offers two sessions. The first will be July 6-17 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at Weber Middle School. The second session will be July 20-31 from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Manorhaven Elementary School. Students can sign up for all four weeks. For each session, there will be two instructors for band and two instructors for orchestra, and they will work with students in small groups each day, focusing primarily on ensemble instruction, but also on individual instruction as needed. The instructors are music teachers from Weber and all five elementary schools. In addition to lessons, students will have a “small block of time for recreational activities,” said Kevin Scully, Director of Creative Arts for the school district. “We want the children to have a fun experience away from the rigors of the school year. Our goal is for the students to make music and have fun in an informal atmosphere,” he said.
Students can register for this ensemble experience online on the creative arts page at www.portnet.org until Friday, June 12. The cost of each two week session is $175. The HEARTS organization offers financial aid in order to grant this opportunity to any interested students. Contact Kevin Scully at kscully@portnet.org for scholarship information. Budding musicians will not want to miss out on this opportunity to reach new heights and perform within their community.
