Cathy Strauss (second from right) is nominated for nurse of the year.

The beloved school nurse for Baylis Elementary, Cathy Strauss, has been nominated by the parents of Baylis and is in the running to be Long Island March of Dimes’ Nurse of the Year.

The March of Dimes pays tribute to the nursing profession and recognizes extraordinary nurses throughout the community. The remarkable efforts of these individuals often go unsung and through Nurse of the Year the March of Dimes is able to honor those who make a difference in the lives of so many. This event has been held in other parts of the country over the years, but this is the first time it is being held on Long Island for Long Islanders.

Jodi Breslin, who is a board member of the March of Dimes, solicited feedback from other parents and submitted a brief synopsis of why Baylis believes Strauss should receive this unique and well deserved honor. The actual ceremony is not until October 2015 and although it will not be known if Strauss has been selected as the winner until later this year, Strauss has already been declared the “best nurse in the world” by the children of Baylis, whom she helps with great compassion and keeps safe on a daily basis.

What follows is the nomination brief submitted by Baylis:

For 30 hours a week, 180 days a year, for six consecutive years, this person is entrusted to care for our children. Cathy is the first person to assess the status of our little ones, whether it’s for a cut, broken bone, sore throat or even a cracked eyeglass lens. She is the first one to tell our kids “You will be ok.” She is the go-to person whom our children feel absolutely comfortable, soothed and at ease with when in her presence. She is always available, communicates frequently, extremely knowledgeable, always calm, amenable and trustworthy.
