Beginning on Monday, June 29, the Floral Park Recreation Center’s day time hours will be filled with exciting and organized activities for children of all ages. Preschool, ages 3 through 5 (9 a.m.); arts and crafts, grades 1 through 6 (10 a.m.); primary recreation program, ages 3 through 5 (9 and 10:15 a.m.); morning sports camps (8:30 a.m. for grades 4-6 and 10 a.m. for grades 7 and above). The first week of the sports camps are basketball for boys and cheerleading/kickball for girls. For the sports camps, grades 4 through 6 meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m., while grades seven and above begin at 10a.m. In the afternoon, boys and girls grades 4 and above can participate in afternoon “tennie-ball” on field 2. Every Wednesday is bingo from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. under the arts and crafts shelter. Also on the Monday, June 29, tennis instructions for youngsters begin, with grades 4 through 8 starting at 1 p.m.; grades K through 3, beginning at 2 p.m, and teen tennis starting at 2:30 p.m. There are still openings in all sections of the fee-based tennis camps. Interested residents may register their child, daily 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the park shelterhouse.
At night, the recreation center becomes the “Hub of Floral Park” when “over 50” adult teams gear up for competitive and recreational play in both the basketball and volleyball leagues, Monday through Thursday nights. Players enjoy exercising and competing with friends and neighbors throughout the summer months. Families, spectators and nightly visitors to the park are treated to the toot of a whistle and entertaining sporting activities under the stars. Team schedules and standings throughout the summer will be posted both on the park bulletin board and on the village website (www.FPVillage.org) under the recreation tag.
All non-fee based programs have an “open enrollment”. Parents who wish to register their children any of these popular programs may do so on the first day (June 29) of summer activities. A special registration table will be set up in front of the shelterhouse. The time for this special registration is 8 to 9:30 a.m., and applications are now available at both the park and pool buildings.
The grand opening of the new Floral Park Pool was a “grand success”. Beautiful weather, lively music, commemorative bracelets, new lounges, chairs, umbrellas, and refreshments provided the setting for more than 2,000 pool members who were delighted with all aspects of this breathtaking village facility.
Both oldsters and youngsters journeyed to the slides for the splashdown on the first weekend of the new pool. Enrollment is on-going for residents who would like to join the pool and the many activities that accompany membership. There is no late fee for new individuals and families wishing to join in the fun.
The Floral Park pool, on Saturday, June 27, switches over to their official summer hours of operation which are 10 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. Indoor yoga class (8:15 a.m.) and children’s gardening (8 a.m.) began on June 20.
Next, on Saturday, June 27, jazz/hip hop dance will begin at 11 a.m. The Early Bird Club (7 a.m.), all-day camp (8:30 a.m.), and cartooning for kids (4 p.m.) will begin on Monday, June 29.
On Tuesday, June 30, day and night water aerobics, indoor slimnastics class, daytime water Zumba and night owl begin. Additional openings have been made for Saturday morning boot camp, aerobics, slimnastics and Zumba programs. Interested villagers may register at the Floral Park Pool, Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This past weekend, a record number of players participated in the annual June Strawberry Tennis Tournament. Players displaying a wide range of skills had a great time playing doubles and mixed doubles. After four rounds of mini-sets, Teresa Foy and Mike Platt amassed the most wins and were declared winners by director Wendy Bilka.
Residents are reminded of some of the park rules, including that there are no bicycles, animals, alcohol, smoking or music devices permitted in the facility or parking lots at any time. A resident VFP Leisure Pass is required for the use of facilities, equipment, and registrations at all times.
