North Shore Synagogue in Syosset recently announced the promotion of Rabbi Jaimee Shalhevet from Associate Rabbi to Senior Rabbi.
Shalhevet has been working at North Shore Synagogue since 2008, when she was ordained by the Hebrew Union College. A native Long Islander, Shalhevet grew up in Sayville and graduated from Brandeis University in 2000. Before enrolling in Rabbinic School, she worked for Synagogue 2000 (now Synagogue 3000) and at Temple Sinai of Roslyn.
While in seminary, Shalhevet served an additional two years as a Rabbinic intern at Temple Sinai of Roslyn. She also served as student Rabbi of Congregation Har Tikvah in Brampton, Ontario, and worked as a chaplain at the VA hospital in St. Albans, Queens.
Shalhevet has a long-standing interest in composing and playing music, which she shares with her congregants. She was a senior song leader at URJ’s Kutz Camp. She also has a primary academic interest in Jewish mysticism and since joining the North Shore Synagogue community, Shalhevet has become an integral part of the temple, lending her voice and ideas to innovative services, providing much needed pastoral care and has become a Rabbi to all. She works with the religious school and nursery school to provide a quality Jewish education for all children.
Among her many other accolades, Shalhevet has introduced innovative services into her repertoire and has become a mentor to so many congregants.
“The North Shore Synagogue family and I have had a long time to get to know each other and I am thrilled to continue in this new role,” she said. “We have grown together and I enjoy my involvement in everyone’s lives. Our future is full of promise and I feel privileged to take part in this ongoing sacred work.”
Shalhevet lives in Plainview with her wife, Rabbi Helayne, and their two children, Sammy and Gabi.
North Shore Synagogue is also excited about expanding its new clergy with Cantorial Intern Jordan Shaner. Shaner is a student at Hebrew Union College in New York City and brings with him extensive knowledge of Jewish music and teachings to the synagogue. He is a graduate of the University of Denver and currently attends the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music. He joins current Cantor, Rich Pilatsky, as well as the other clergy, on the bimah for services and life cycle events.
