It was Sanford who was fatally injured last December while battling a house fire in Woodmere, leaving behind widow Jacqueline Scott-Sanford and a daughter. In an effort to duplicate the fundraising success it had when the Tunnel to Towers Foundation paid off the mortgages on the homes of slain NYC detectives Liu and Ramos, the organization has pledged to do the same for the Sanford family, with the help of Long Islanders.
Tunnel to Towers has a special affinity for Long Island since Stephen Siller, the fallen 9/11 firefighter for whom the organization is named, grew up in Rockville Centre and graduated from St. Agnes High School.
“We are halfway to our goal of selling 1,000 seats, but we need Long Islanders—who depend upon volunteer firefighters like Joseph Sanford—to really step up now and help hit this out of the park for his family,” explained Tunnel to Towers COO John Hodge. “While technically, baseball’s All-Star Game is in July, we consider all those who purchase tickets to the Aug. 4 Yankees/Red Sox game, in honor of firefighter Joseph Sanford, the real All Stars.”
