Work will begin on the Village of Plandome’s project to upgrade the water mains on Valley Road and Brookside Drive. The project will replace the 4-inch water mains with 8-inch water mains on these roads, which is necessary to provide sufficient water flow for firefighting. G & M Earth Moving, Inc. will be responsible for the construction work, under the supervision of Sidney B. Bowne & Son, LLP, and with the oversight of Steven Flynn, highway foreman, and the highway department.
The work will begin at Valley Road near the intersection of Central Drive and proceed south and east to Brookside Drive, then north on Brookside to Woodland Drive. The construction will have three phases:
1. Digging a trench along the side of the road, laying of the new 8-inch pipe, and covering the pipe with fill and temporary paving, covering approximately 200 to 300 feet per day;
2. Pressure testing of the new 8-inch water main and testing the water quality in the installed sections of pipe, with four or five sections in all; and
3. Connecting of the new 8-inch water mains to the household water supply. This will involve shutting off water to each house for approximately two to three hours. The village will notify each homeowner by
flyer and by email the day before
this shut-off occurs, and the construction company will schedule the shut-off between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. when we anticipate water demand will be lowest.
Once the water mains have been installed and all connections to houses completed—hopefully by the end of August, weather permitting—repaving of Valley and Brookside will restore the streets to top-notch condition in September or October.
By scheduling the water main replacement work during late July and August when many families will be away on vacation, the Village of Plandome hopes to minimize disruptions.
The project is necessary for the safety and security of Plandome residents, as well as for the quality of the village’s infrastructure.
