The Town of Oyster Bay will hold a free rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets on Sept. 19th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. The clinic, which is conducted in conjunction with the Nassau County Department of Health and the Long Island Veterinary Medical Association, will be conducted at the Town Animal Shelter, 150 Miller Place, in Syosset.
“The town is partnering with the Long Island Veterinary Medical Association to sponsor a free rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets so residents will have the chance to get these important inoculations for their pets free of charge,” Johnson said.
The councilwoman went on to say that legally, all dogs in Nassau County must be licensed and inoculated against rabies. While the license law does not extend to cats or ferrets, state law does require that they be vaccinated against rabies.
Johnson noted that it is highly recommended that dogs, cats and ferrets older than four months receive their first two inoculations one year apart and receive boosters every three years thereafter. Dogs must be on leashes when inside the vlinic and cats and ferrets must be in enclosed carriers. Personnel from the town’s animal shelter will be on hand to help deal with the large number of animals expected and to assist residents interested in adopting a dog or cat. No reservations are necessary for the clinic.

“This is the perfect opportunity for pet owners to bring their dog, cat or ferret to the vaccination clinic and give their pets the gift of a clean bill of health and a vaccination against rabies,” Johnson said, adding that voluntary donations to the Long Island Veterinary Medical Association’s Animal Health Fund will be gratefully accepted and contributed towards the ongoing effort to keep pets healthy.
