Sylvia Rymer, 101

Sylvia Rymer, age 101 years, a resident of Great Neck for over 40 years, died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 3, at Grace Plaza Nursing Home.

Born May 6, 1914, in Philadelphia, Rymer’s family moved to New York City where she met and married her husband, Ernest Rymer, who has predeceased her. The couple lived in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, with their three daughters until moving to Great Neck in the 1970s.

Rymer was a charter member of the Kadimah, a women’s chapter of American Jewish Congress. She was also an education assistant in Prospect Heights High School in Brooklyn for two decades. Rymer found time to be active in the civil rights movements, and even traveling to Washington in 1963 to participate.

Rymer is survived by her daughters, Jo, Carrie and Charna; grandchildren, David, Joshua, Toby, Michael, Rick and Emma, and great grandchildren, Kelsey, Sydney, Ryan and Allison.
