On Thursday, Sept. 10, acting District Attorney Madeline Singas won the Democratic Primary for Nassau County District Attorney. Singas beat her primary opponent, Michael Scotto, 75 percent to 25 percent and now moves on to face Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray in the Nov. 3 general election.
“Tonight, we took a huge step towards making sure Nassau continues to be one of the safest counties in America,” Singas said. “It’s a step towards continuing Kathleen Rice’s legacy of aggressive and tough prosecution and a step towards ending public corruption, fighting the scourge of heroin and cracking down on the violent criminals who threaten our communities. Most importantly, we took a step towards making sure Nassau has a lifelong prosecutor, not a career politician, as district attorney.”
Singas was sworn in as acting district attorney in January 2015, following the departure of Rep. Kathleen Rice, under whom she served as chief assistant since 2011. Singas began her career as a prosecutor in 1991 and has more than two decades of courtroom experience. Since joining the county district attorney’s office in 2006, she has successfully prosecuted some of the county’s most notorious violent criminals and served as chief of Nassau County’s special victim’s bureau. She is a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, Barnard College, Columbia University and Fordham University School of Law.
