The Mineola Mustangs (2-1) varsity football team dominated the Great Neck South Rebels (0-3) 41-6 on Saturday, Sept. 26, wasting no time by putting 13 points on the board in the first quarter and opened the second with an interception by sophomore Nick Natale and secured another touchdown two minutes later.
The Rebels scored their only touchdown in the second quarter and missed their two-point conversation. Mineola then quickly struck back with a score, followed Natale’s second interception—this time in Rebels territory and running in for a 40 yard score.
Leading 34-6 by halftime, the Mustang’s towering lead was too much for the Rebels to make a comeback.
Mustang senior and co-captain Matt Kosowski had 161 yards and four rushing touchdowns on 12 carries.
Junior running back Abraham Valdizon scored a touchdown as well, sophomore running back Edwin Acevado rushed 63 yards and sophomore running back Sebastian Domenech rushed 54 yards.
“We did well today,” Mustangs head coach Dan Guido said. “We still dropped the ball a few times, but we did what we had to do, and we’re looking how we’re supposed to look out there.”
Earlier this month, Guido cited their opening season-opening game against Great Neck North (0-3), which they won 20-12, Great Neck South and their upcoming matchup against 14th seed Friends Academy (2-1) on Oct. 3, as imperative for the Mustang’s season.
Mineola, seeded 12th, came off their 28-6 loss to West Hempstead (2-1) a week prior, who is seeded fourth in Nassau Conference IV. Great Neck South is seeded 15th, only behind Oyster Bay (3-0), who the Mustangs will face on Oct. 10.
