The pumpkins, gourds and corn stalks are ready for harvesting to be sold at the fifth annual Manhasset Pumpkin Sale. This event will take place Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. or until the inventory runs out at Manhasset Secondary School front field. The event will be held rain or shine.
The annual Manhasset tradition was cultivated by a local Manhasset family: a father, a mother and their son. Michael McGoey, now a Manhasset Middle School student, and his family have been providing pumpkins for this successful event every year since 2011. Five years ago, Mike asked his dad if they could sell pumpkins from their farm for charity. His dad agreed and accompanied him to pitch the idea to the school principal who thought it was a wonderful idea, and the pumpkin sale became official. The pumpkins, gourds and corn stalks are grown on their farm located near Cooperstown, New York.
For the past five years, the McGoey family along with a number of Manhasset families go up to Cooperstown to plant seeds for the pumpkins, gourds and cornstalks every Memorial Day weekend at the McGoey’s farm in Fly Creek in upstate New York. The families then return at the end of September to harvest all the crops that were planted. The pumpkins gourds and cornstalks are loaded on to a refrigerated tractor trail owned by the McGoey family, to be transported to Manhasset. So when you see a tractor trailer track with “Go Manhasset” you know the farm fresh bounty is ready for sale.
This is the perfect opportunity to get your fall decorations underway. Prices start at $5. All proceeds will be donated to charity.
In years past, the money raised has been donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Manhasset Coalition Against Breast Cancer, the Best Buddies Program and Paul Newman’s Double H Ranch.
