The Gold Coast International Film Festival (GCIFF) will be hosting the Long Island premiere of A Ballerina’s Tale starring Misty Copeland on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Soundview Cinemas in Port Washington.
A Ballerina’s Tale tells the incredible true story of Misty Copeland, an iconic ballerina who made history this year when she was the first ever African-American woman to be named principal dancer of the legendary American Ballet Theatre (ABT). This film provides a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how Copeland overcame a tumultuous upbringing in poverty, faced near career-ending injuries and then succeeded in becoming one of the most revered dancers of her generation. The film encapsulates the trials and triumphs of a trailblazing artist whose perseverance has become a hugely inspirational story for all.
Copeland has performed to much acclaim in the Broadway hit musical On the Town and will continue to delight audiences this fall with ABT.
The screening will take place at 7:30 p.m. and a postscreening discussion will follow, featuring Susan Fales-Hill, Copeland’s mentor and former board member of American Ballet Theatre. The discussion will be moderated by Shiba Russell, the Emmy award-winning anchor of WNBC-TV.
The GCIFF produces a year-round film series featuring an exciting slate of quality films and award-winning talent and just recently won first place in “The Best of North Shore” competition as the “Best Attraction” within the region. This fall, the GCIFF will be celebrating its 5th Anniversary Festival from Nov. 9 to 15.
