Shed The Meds At Shelter Rock Elementary School

ShedMed_100715BOn Saturday, Sept. 19, a Shed the Meds collection program was held at Shelter Rock School in Manhasset. This Shed the Meds program was sponsored by State Senator Jack M. Martins in partnership with the Manhasset Community Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CASA) and the Nassau County Police Department. The program, one of many held throughout the year in Nassau County, helps residents safely dispose of unused or expired medications.

ShedMed_100715AChristopher Schneider, director of communications for Senator Martins, reported that business was “brisk” and that a total of over 700 pounds of medications were dropped off by over 150 residents. All collected medication will be safely disposed of by officers from the Nassau County Police Department.

Improper disposal of medications, such as pouring them down sink drains or flushing them down toilets, can potentially pollute local waterways and the drinking water supply. Safe disposal of unwanted medications helps protect the environment and in addition eliminates the risk of the drugs getting into the hands of small children or those who might misuse them. Residents who would like information about future Shed the Meds collection programs can call Senator Martins’ office at 516-746-5924.
