Another Mets season came and went and though the team exceeded expectations and made the World Series, the final out came with pain, heartbreak and sheer darkness.
The World Series against the Kansas City Royals came down to missed opportunities and blown saves. It came down to contact hitting, poor defense and championship experience—or lack thereof.
Having been to the series last season, the Royals were confident and comfortable, even while trailing in the late innings. This was the Royals’ year and no amount of “Ya Gotta Believe” Mets magic was going to change that.
But take heart, long-suffering Mets fans. The pitching staff is loaded with young flame throwers and the batting order has some real potential as well. This team of hitters and hurlers came painfully close to glory, only to have it ripped away. But perhaps this is exactly what this particular Mets team needed; to experience the pressure of the promised land.
It was a truly amazin’ season and there is no shame in losing to the team that was expected to go all the way. When the season shifts to spring, dig out that Mets jersey and start cheering all over again.
