Anthony Bencivenga of Mineola is a former letter-carrier and supervisor of mail at the Mineola Post Office. He serves as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Aidan’s Church and he brought communion to me during a recent stay at Winthrop University Hospital.

Betsy Dolan of Andrews Road is originally from Mineola, where she has lived for 20 years. She works at Winthrop Hospital. Her mother is Kathryn Klein who was a nursing supervisor for 40 years at Winthrop.

Great to have Josephine Dendesco back with us at the Bristal after her recent stay in the hospital. • • • •
Russ Miller of Mineola recently visited Father Gerard Gordon, who is now the pastor of the parish of Saint Martin of Tours in Amityville. Father Gordon, who had been stationed at Corpus Christi some years back, had most recently been the associate pastor of Saint Dominic Church in Oyster Bay.

When I stayed at Winthrop Hospital, my roommate turned out to be Lou Cianea, who owned General Furniture on Jericho Turnpike, across the street from the bowling alley on the east end. I hadn’t seen him in many years. He kept looking at me and saying, “I knew you in the past.” I, however, said, I couldn’t recall having seen him before. Then he said to me, “Did you once work for a weekly newspaper somewhere?” Suddenly, a light went on and I realized who he was. Hey, c’mon, I am 92 years old and I can’t remember everything.

Jim and Maureen Howard visited Jim’s brother, Father Ted Howard, who is in a nursing home out East where he says mass daily.

Gloria and Ritchie Corrao were married at the New Hyde Park Inn 50 years ago. They held their 50th anniversary party in the exact same room of the Inn of New Hyde Park last month.

Ruth Kazdan was attending a meeting of the Golden Age Group with Mayor Scott Strauss as the guest speaker when the mayor was suddenly called out because of a horrific automobile accident in the vicinity of Willis Avenue and Jericho Turnpike.

Cody Duffy bought himself a used Mustang to tinker with like his dad, Gavin. He has a deep love for cars. He wants to know what really makes them tick and learn every function of the motor. Cody and his brother, Tigue, and their mother, Irene, have been all over to different car shows.

Sorry to hear about the death of Lou DiVeglio of Beebe Road. His niece, Kathie Dougherty, is watching over the house.

Danielle Donnelly, only 41 years old, died in Maryland. She was the wife of Kevin and the daughter-in-law of Tony and Beverly Donnelly.

Bill Devanthal now makes a living writing documents. He has lived most of his live Pomander Road with his dad, Bill, and mother, Ruth. Bill Devanthal, Sr. died recently.

Eileen Leone has arthritis so bad in her knees that she cannot get to do much of anything except attend mass at Corpus Christi Church on Sunday. She is looking forward to her annual trip to Florida.

A few people might remember John Pavlovich of Dow Avenue. He ran that great restaurant, The Executive, on the corner of First Street and Mineola Boulevard.

Peter Gollobin recently attended the wedding of his daughter, Stephanie, in Washington, DC. Peter is working on a variety of industrial medical products at his East Second Street factory called MediPoint.

Editors Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, a graduate of Adelphi, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace have lived in Mineola for 60 years, and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.
