A Voice From The GN Chinese Association
The Great Neck Chinese Association (GNCA) organized a breast cancer awareness seminar at Great Neck House on Dec. 13. The seminar followed a memorial service for community organizer and activist Lily Wang, who died of breast cancer in October 2015. The event was to promote breast cancer awareness among the Chinese-American population and close to 30 people attended the seminar.
Dr. Beth Siegel, Section of Breast Surgery chief and director of Flushing Comprehensive Breast Surgical Services, presented the latest data on the incidence of breast cancer among Chinese women in China and their counterparts in the Western world. Her presentation also included commonsense approaches to workup and treatment of breast masses. Jianan Qiao, her physician assistant, skillfully translated the lecture in a calm and clear manner using layman’s terminology.
The lecture generated many in-depth questions from the audience, many of whom were GNCA board members. New York–Presbyterian/Queens Hospital attending physician Dr. Alice Kim, a breast radiologist from Lakeville, and Nora Morgenstern, a pathologist from Saddle Rock, were among the audience members and Great Neck parents who contributed their expertise to the discussion.
The presentation was followed by the sharing of personal experience from Wendy Louie, a breast cancer survivor of 17 years. Dr. MingDer Chang, senior director of Community Health Initiative, concluded the program by introducing available services in the community. The event was jointly sponsored by New York–Presbyterian/Queens Hospital and GNCA. Else Lau prepared the healthy meal for this event.
