Food is beginning to fill the shelves, lights and ceiling tiles are being installed. Although the proposed date of Jan. 29 was a bit ambitious, the opening of Best Market in Waldbaum’s old Great Neck home is imminent.
“There was a little more work than we anticipated,” said Best Market store manager Jay Schwartz. “It’s coming along; some days there are 100 workers in the store. I think everyone will be pretty happy with it.”

Schwartz, who worked for Waldbaum’s for 29 years, most recently in the Douglaston store prior to its closing, said that many of the Douglaston employees had relocated to the Great Neck Waldbaum’s years ago. He interviewed and rehired many of those familiar faces from Waldbaum’s to staff Best Market.
