Substitute Teacher Arrested

On Feb. 11, Port Washington Police District detectives arrested James Servin, a 51-year-old male from New York City, for incidents that occurred at Weber Middle School in late January, according to Port Washington Police Chief James Salerno.

Servin was employed as a substitute teacher at Weber Middle School. Port Washington detectives started an investigation after being contacted by one of the two victims’ parents. Servin was charged with two counts of the following:

• Endangering the Welfare of a Child

• Forcible Touching

• Second-Degree Sex Abuse.

Servin was arraigned at 1st District Court in Hempstead on Feb. 12. The case was adjourned until March 17. Servin was released on a $2,500 bond.

Dr. Kathleen Mooney, superintendent of Port Washington Schools, said, “The district has learned that a substitute teacher at Weber Middle School has been arrested based on allegations of inappropriate behavior with students. The district takes these allegations very seriously as the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. Accordingly, as is our policy in situations such as this, our immediate first step was to remove the teacher from the classroom. We also notified the Port Washington Police so that they could conduct an investigation as rapidly as possible. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities.”
