The Schreiber Varsity Baseball Team is gearing up for a great season this year. The team already started scrimmaging—their first scrimmage was on Friday, March 18, against Friends Academy, and their second was on Saturday, March 19, against Lynbrook. Schreiber won against Friends Academy 5-0 and won against Lynbrook 2-1.
Coach Matthew Holzer is looking forward to a great season. Holzer has been coaching baseball for 12 years, seven of which were at the varsity level. His assistant coach is Phil Spotteck. Spotteck has been Holzer’s assistant for three years.
Coach Holzer likes their chances this year.
“We are coming off a very successful 2015 season,” said Holzer. “We were 12-7, finished second in our conference (AA3) and made the playoffs for the first time since 2009. We have eight seniors returning from last year’s team and some very talented juniors and sophomores, so I think we should have another successful season. We play in a very good conference but feel like we are not only good enough to make the playoffs, but we can also compete for the conference title (conference AA2).”
The players have taken their off-season seriously and have been keeping in shape all winter to be able to return to baseball at full strength.
“Our players have been working hard since the fall to get themselves ready for the season,” said Holzer. “We have a close-knit team that takes baseball very seriously and we are looking forward to continuing what we started last season.”
The team has scrimmages scheduled through March. Their first league game is a home game against Baldwin on Monday, April 11, at 4:45 p.m. The Coaches vs. Cancer game will be at home on Saturday, April 16, at 12:30 p.m. Come out to cheer for the team.
