Amidst the beautiful beaches, quaint shops and lighthouses that populate Martha’s Vineyard is a unique offering that will quickly leave its mark as one of the most memorable places on your vacation.

Island Alpaca is a family-friendly destination that lets visitors get up close and personal with dozens of alpacas. Not to be confused with llamas, alpacas are mild-mannered, timid and known for their soft, warm fleece.

There are not many alpaca farms in the United States, so Island Alpaca is a great way to discover more about these fun animals in a hands-on environment. More than 50 alpacas roam the 19-acre farm run by owner Barbara Ronchetti.

“Island Alpaca is a terrific destination to learn about and enjoy the company of the alpaca,” Ronchetti said. “The alpaca are sweet and gentle animals, and wonderful to meet up close in the farm’s viewing area.”

IslandAlpaca__EEvery alpaca has a name and unique personality, some of them have even won awards at shows. At Island Alpaca, visitors can not only see the alpacas, but feed, pet and walk them. In April, the farm also has a shearing day, which draws hundreds of visitors who come to see the alpacas get their hair shorn. Visitors who come to the farm between May and October may find themselves witnessing a birth. And the alpaca fun doesn’t have to end when you leave the farm. Island Alpaca has alpacas for sale as well as sponsorship opportunities.

“Alpacas are truly unique and wonderful creature with personality,” Ronchetti said. “With their ability to adapt to virtually any climate they can and do live in any state in the country. Their gentle humming and playful pronking as well as minimal care requirements make them truly a unique livestock.”
