Environmental concerns are central to The Friends of Cedarmere. And so, it is fitting that on Sunday, May 22, Pulitzer Prize-winning environmental journalist Dan Fagin will speak at the Annual Friends of Cedarmere fundraising brunch, held at the Sea Cliff Yacht Club, at noon.
Awarded the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, Fagin’s latest book, Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation, was described by The New York Times as “a new classic in science reporting.” A Times bestseller, the book also won the New York Public Library’s Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism, the National Academy of Sciences’ Communication Award and the Society of Environmental Journalists’ Rachel Carson Book Award. Toms River was included in several lists of the best books of the year, including by NPR, which described the book as a “gripping, page-turning environmental thriller,” and by Kirkus Reviews, which called it “fascinating” and “hard-hitting.”
Fagin, a professor of journalism at NYU, speak on environmental concerns that are a key element of Cedarmere’s ongoing restorations, which include maintaining a one-of-a-kind historic landscape featuring a serene freshwater pond situated in very close proximity to the salt-water ecology of Hempstead Harbor. Cedarmere is a jewel in the Roslyn community, a model of sustainable waterfront development, offering a living, centuries-old example of strong environmental stewardship, as first practiced by its longtime proprietor, poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878).
Current members are offered the brunch at $46, while non-members will enjoy the event for $56; both are invited to renew their membership or to become members for $76. Guests at the Yacht Club will enjoy a prepared buffet, with made to order omelets, tempting entrees, generous sides, fresh fruit, rolls, juice, dessert and coffee or tea, as well as a complimentary bar drink.
