Around Town With Lou

Editor’s Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, a graduate of Adelphi, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace have lived in Mineola for 60 years, and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.

Gavin Duffy and his wife, Irene, and sons, Cody and Tigue, live on Beebe Road. Gavin worked as an undercover cop in New York City for many years. The other day Gavin was kind enough to visit us at The Bristal in Westbury and brought me a copy of Sports Illustrated where the feature item was about the old New York Americans, the state’s first hockey team which played from 1925 to 1941. When I started this newspaper, I named it the Mineola American because of my love for this team.

We noted that Queen Elizabeth has no real power and that the real power rests with the prime minister. Someone joked that while England has a queen and prime minister, we have a president and the Kardashians!

To brood. Birds would sit on their eggs until they hatched and then would keep them warm. Brood was the Anglo-Saxon word for “breed.” Thus it has come down that anyone who sits and thinks is said to “brood.”
