A Manhattan man was charged with 17 counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument after trying to use fake checks at Sam Ash in Carle Place.
According to the Nassau County Police Department, Lamont Canteen, 37, while at Sam Ash, 385 Old Country Rd. in Carle Place, made a purchase utilizing what was later found to be, a fraudulent check totaling $2,323.24.
On Monday, May 16, Canteen returned to Sam Ash and attempted to make another purchase utilizing a check. Without Canteen’s knowledge, the store manager, who recognized him from the prior incident, called 911.
Upon police arrival Canteen was placed under arrest without incident. He was found to be in possession of numerous fraudulent checks as well as fraudulent identifications to match those checks.
Canteen is charged with seventeen counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument and fourth-degree grand larceny. He was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on May 17.
