Karmacue At Alper’s Feeds The Masses

karma1Port came out in force to sample the best barbecue around at Alper’s Karmacue on Sunday, May 22.

“We are extremely proud to sponsor and organize Karmacue,” said Adam Novick, an owner of Alper’s. “This year’s Karmacue is the eighth and I think our best yet. Alper’s gladly contributes to multiple organizations through the year, but there is something very special about creating an event like this that engages the community in such a tangible manner. Every dollar of profit (and sometimes more) is donated to The Community Chest of Port Washington. After this year’s tally is finalized, I expect we will have raised well over $30,000 for The Community Chest. It’s something we are very proud of.”Karmacue052516A Karmacue052516B Karmacue052516C Karmacue052516D Karmacue052516E Karmacue052516F Karmacur052516G

BBQ teams were out and cooking by 6 a.m. “While Alper’s organizes Karmacue, it would not be such a success without the passion and talent of the BBQ teams that compete in the Cook-Off,” said Novick. “They truly are the stars of the show.” The judges of the Cook-Off were Bill Mullholland from The Schmear Bakery & Market (opening at 83 Main St.), Jeff Jackson, CJ Gober and Alan Gilbert.

The winners of the Cook-Off were:

• 3rd place for chicken: Determined Barbecue

• 3rd place for ribs: BBQ’s Brothers

• 2nd place for chicken: La DiliQ

• 2nd place for ribs: Determined BBQ

•1st place for chicken: BBQ’s Brothers

• 1st place for ribs: New Pigs on the Block

• 3rd place overall for chicken and ribs: New Pigs on the Block

• 2nd place overall for chicken and ribs: Determined BBQ

• 1st place overall for chicken and ribs: BBQ’s Brothers

• 3rd place People’s Choice: New Pigs on the Block

• 2nd place Peoples Choice: BBQ Brothers

• 1st place People’s Choice: Meathead BBQ

“Local restaurants also really showed their stuff this year with BareBurger, Yummy Gyro, Port Thai Place, Ralph’s Ices, Port Beer & Soda and COFFEED all raising money as well,” said Novick. “Soulshine Art Studio, who has participated every year, goes above and beyond and donates 100 percent of sales, not just profits, to Karmacue. Hat Trixx, musician Chuck Idol and iSchool bands all donate their time. Sponsors like Friends of Port Rowing and OurHarvest helped make the day a complete success. Without help from Nancy Sinoway Designs, S.F. Falconer’s Florist, The Lutheran Church, Handyman Gary Hare, the Port Police and The Town of North Hempstead, the event would not go off as smoothly as it did.”
