Memorial Day was damped by a visit from Tropical Storm Bonnie. The storm made its way up the coast quickly and dropped a significant amount of heavy rain overnight.
Deciding whether or not to have the event came on the shoulder of the American Legion Post #304 which manages the event. With the significant number of people marching and those coming in from outside of Manhasset, the Legion decided to cancel the event for safety sake. Parade Chairman James Brooks was reminded of the time “over 15 years ago when the parade had to be cancelled due to weather.”
Though officially cancelled, the parade of Manhasset Lakeville Firemen did not disappoint fans, especially little Tyler who was on his father’s shoulders. He was thrilled to witness this dramatic parade of dedicated volunteers and their magnificent equipment.
The Village of Plandome which holds its annual Memorial Day Parade earlier at 7:30 a.m.delayed the start of its parade one hour. Commander John Furlong said, “the weather forecasted a storm cell passing overhead, so we delayed the parade for one hour.” The entire village was invited to participate in the Memorial Day festivities, BBQ and fire engines rides for the kids.
