North High School sophomore Amy Shteyman is an American Fine Arts Festival (AFAF) Competition winner in piano, based on a recording she submitted. As a winner, she’ll perform in concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on June 11.
Shteyman began playing at age of 3½ and looks to piano as a way to release her emotions. “Playing is so expressive and it truly shows all the effort and hard work that I put into it,” said Shteyman, who views music—whether listening or playing—as an innate, passionate part of her life. “I love playing for myself because it is so mentally stimulating and challenging. When others hear me play and feel the passion my music conveys, that makes music feel closer and more special to me.”
Established in 2003 by educator and professional violinist Vladimir Agilin and run by Art & Music Unlimited, AFAF organizes annual music festivals and performance competitions, providing hundreds of music students an opportunity to perform in formal concert settings. The organization has educational ties with organizations throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia.
